Educational activities of the University Center for Space Research and Technologies
Main educational activities of the Center are master's Program on Space research and Module 1 Aerospace engineering (small aero-spacecraft) of the master's Program Aerospace engineering and communications, but its members lead also many courses of undergraduate programs in physics and engineering physics.
One PhD student from the University of Bologna, Italy, was trained at the Center within the European program for PhD student exchange ERASMUS.
Another educational activity is Circle of Astronomy and Space Research of University Center for Space Research and Technologies. The circle performs astronomical observations and research in the field of astrophysics and space research under the guidance of experienced astronomers and space scientists.
Master Degree Program "Space Research"
- Study duration: 3/5 terms
- Form of education: full/part time
- Prof. Todor Mishonov, Dr. Habil, tmishonov at phys.uni-sofia.bg
Master degree program in physics: Space Research is a profiled educational programme. It gives deep knowledge and practical skills that encompass the main fields of the modern Space Physics. Graduated students obtain all necessary training to work as scientists in scientific research institutions and companies performing scientific tasks, for example in the fields of remote sensing, satellite communications, defense, etc. Significant part of their education is aimed to the problems of studding of the Space, Near-Earth Regions, Plasma Physics and High-energy Physics, as well as computer and database processing which is also common job in various companies and research institutes. All graduated students have necessary basis start teaching in universities and educational institutes.
Eligible students which can enroll in the master degree programme must possess either:
- a bachelor or a master degree in natural sciences, mathematics or appropriate engineering studies.
- a bachelor or a master degree with qualification for teaching in natural sciences and/or mathematics.
The study in the master degree program Space Research for education of students without a bachelor or a master degree in Physics, Engineering Physics or Astrophysics, Meteorology and Geophysics consists of 5 terms. It includes about 1500 hours of auditorium occupation that should give at least 150 ECTS-credits total for all 5 terms as the minimum number of ECTS-credits for a single term is 30. The mandatory courses for the 5 terms are 16 with total of 1005 hours and they all give 93 ECTS-credits. The optional courses are minimum 8 of 295 hours total and they give at least 42 ECTS-credits. A Master of Science thesis of 200 hours with 15 ECTS-credits is included in the fifth semester.

Circle of Astronomy and Space Research
Members of the circle participated in observations which led to the discovery of all new Bulgarian asteroids in the last 10 years!
This is the only circle of Astronomy and Space Research in Bulgaria, which has independent scientific research. In it students may conduct their own research with significant results under the guidance of professionals. This circle made all calibrations for astronomical observations of the National programme for research of the solar eclipse in 1999, and 6 expeditions for observation of solar eclipses in 2006 and 1999. Students from different universities and schools participate in the circle.
Some of the circle's observations are posted in the Sky & Telescope magazine photo gallery here, here, here and here.
The circle of Astronomy and Space Research of UCSRT benefits from the support of Sofia University Student's Council. The Student's council project activity funded two student projects for the academic years of 2012/2013 and 2013/2014.
